Director of Development
Chesapeake Shakespeare Company. Baltimore, MD. 2022 - Present.

Serving as Director of Development for Chesapeake Shakespeare Company, Maryland’s leading classical theatre company. Responsible for designing and implementing a comprehensive fundraising plan... incorporating annual giving, grant solicitation and management, special events, and capital initiatives. Ongoing duties include identifying, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding major gifts from individual donors, foundations, government agencies, and corporate partners. 



Communications Director
SeKON Enterprise. Reston, VA. 2017 - 2022.

Serving as a senior communications specialist for a Federal government contractor specializing in health IT systems services. Developed communications plans and managed program communications and outreach for the leadership of the Office of Information Technology at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) headquarters. Currently serving as Communications Manager, including Scrum Master duties, as a member of the Content Management Team at the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), on a project improving content management strategy for internet, intranet and SharePoint sites.

 Developed a plan to facilitate timely and effective communications throughout the program office, and among internal and external stakeholders.
 Planning, managing and coordinating communications and outreach activities, including program office announcements, preparing inter-office communications, updating content on website portals, and authoring and editing periodic newsletters.
 Training and orienting those involved in executing the communications processes. Monitoring, tracking and measuring execution; identifying opportunities for process improvement.



Deputy Director for Individual Giving
Center Stage. Baltimore, MD. 2015 - 2017.

Management of Annual Fund for Baltimore's largest professional producing theater, recognized as the State Theater of Maryland. Duties included direct mail planning and implementation, as well as cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of donors, planning of committee meetings and special events, and capital campaign activities.

Managed $950,000 Annual Fund individual giving campaign.
 Directed effort to improve Giving Tuesday campaign, resulting in 400% increase.
 Organized stewardship/cultivation events for $1,500+ annual donors.
 Managed Trustee giving requests, increasing response rate by 25% in FY17.
 Revitalized End-of-Fiscal Year direct mail campaign, raising over $11,000 in FY16.
 Assisted in management and organization of Planned Giving efforts.



Director of Communications / Grants Manager
People's Community Health Centers, Inc. Baltimore, MD. 2011 - 2014.

Management and implementation of internal and external communications for 45-year-old FQHC (Federally Qualified Health Center) based in Baltimore. Duties included writing, design and production management of electronic and print materials, including website, social media and promotional handouts. External communications included research, writing and submission of government, foundation and corporate grants, as well as project development with clinical staff and partner organizations, coordination with program, finance and compliance teams, completion and submission of HRSA Electronic Handbook (EHB) and Grants.gov forms, and stewardship. Member of leadership team, reporting directly to President/CEO. Promoted to Director of Communications in March 2013.

Secured over $300,000 in new private and government funding.
Managed annual grant portfolio of $1.1 million.
Successful acquisition of Ryan White HIV funding (Parts A, B and C).
Brought website design in house, saving resulting insignificant cost savings.
Assisted in planning and hosting Annual Meeting and other special events.




Project Manager

Managed local operations for philanthropy consulting firm with human service, cultural and higher education clients in Washington, Virginia, Maryland and North Carolina. Specializing in transformational giving, including donor research, gift solicitation and grant writing. Also served as Interim Chief Operating Officer.

Presented proposals and reports to new and potential clients. 
Supervised grant writers, researchers, event planners and other contractors.
Managed administrative and financial operations in DC and Virginia for CEO.



Director, Corporate Communications
Genesis HealthCare Corporation. Towson, MD. 2005 - 2009.

Directed internal communications efforts for one of the nation’s largest group of skilled nursing centers. Managed print and intranet publications distributed to 36,000 employees in over 200 locations throughout 13 states. Special focus areas included political advocacy and compliance. Reported to VP, Corporate Communications.

Supervised and trained team’s Administrative Assistant.
Edited and managed production of bi-weekly print publication.
Assisted VP, Government Relations on multi-state political advocacy tour.




Manager, Corporate & Foundation Relations
Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen). Phoenix, AZ. 2003 - 2004.

Managed production of grants, proposals and other communications/publications for philanthropic support of new medical research institute's Neurogenomics Division.

Recruited from Washington, DC to assist researchers from NIH.
Wrote grants, proposals and reports securing over $150,000 in funds.




Grants Manager
Children’s National Hospital. Washington, DC 2000 - 2003.

Managed production of (non-research) grants for philanthropic support at the country’s third oldest hospital for children, founded in 1870. Contact with major gift donors and prospects, with emphasis on securing corporate and foundation support during $300 million Giant Steps campaign. Reported to Director of Corporate, Foundation and Association Relations, then to campaign Executive Director.

Secured $1 million capital grant for new research lab build-out.
Managed annual portfolio of over $3 million in corporate and foundation grants.




Director of Development & Marketing
Baltimore Museum of Industry, Inc. Baltimore, MD. 1999 - 2000.

Managed development and marketing departments of award-winning Inner Harbor museum. Developed grant proposals, program reports and project descriptions. Solicited donors, corporate members, foundations and local government. Contributed to exhibit openings, trade show appearances and other events. Staff liaison to Board committees. Directed production of newsletter, annual report and other promotional materials. Supervised staff and volunteers. Recruited by museum's Founding Executive Director.

Achieved 30% increase in Annual Fund campaign donations.
Co-wrote article published in international trade journal for educators.



Publications / Marketing Director
The Engineering Society of Baltimore, Inc. Baltimore, MD. 1992 - 1998.

Planned and implemented all public relations, marketing and publications for 1,000-member non profit organization founded in 1905. Duties included editing and production of Baltimore Engineer magazine (first published in 1926). Produced press releases, articles, brochures, periodicals, food service menus and event programs. Supervised advertising sales and secured sponsorships.

Restructured magazine production process, saving $1,500 during first six months.
Designed new publication, resulting in increased readership and savings of $33,000 annually. 

 Awarded association’s first honor for exemplary administrative service (1996).



Direct Mail / Circulation
Baltimore Magazine / Capital-Gazette Communications. Baltimore, MD. 1987 - 1992.

Managed all promotional and administrative printing, plus subscriber and newsstand marketing for nation’s oldest city/regional magazine. Edited scripts and co-produced radio commercials. Tracked and analyzed department expenses. Worked closely with management at the Washingtonian.

Managed 200,000-piece direct mail efforts, with a response of 3% or better.
Developed new copy and concepts for magazine insert cards.
